AdAge Reports The Fat Tire Craze In Minnesota
Comparing Fat Tire to the iPhone, Jeremy Mullman of AdvertisingAge.com takes an interesting look at the marketing of craft beers as they expand into new markets. The article focuses its attention on the experience of Surdyk’s as customers lined up to be the first to buy a Fat Tire in Minnesota.
Surdyk’s sold more than 600 $40 cases of Fat Tire in the first hour, roughly equivalent to 0.14% of the fast-growing craft brand’s entire 2006 national shipment volume.
This History Of Brewing In Minnesota
The good folks over at MNBeer.com report the release of Doug Hoverson’s new book, Land of Amber Waters: The History of Brewing In Minnesota.
Starting with its first brewery in 1849, Doug Hoverson tells the story of the state’s beer industry from the small-town breweries that gave way to larger companies with regional and national prominence (including Hamm’s, Grain Belt, and Schell’s) to the vibrant beer culture of today, led by a new wave of breweries such as Summit, Lake Superior Brewing Co., and Surly, as well as brewpubs like Town Hall Brewery, Fitger’s, and Granite City Brewpub, sustained by microbreweries, home brewers, and beer aficionados.
Be sure to check out MNBeer.com’s post about the book.

The Minnesota page reports that total economic contribution that beer makes to the state is $3,486,039,433.

I’m not going to make any attempt to summarize this story. Just read it for yourself.

Anheuser-Busch To Raise Beer Prices In 2007 & 2008
Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch reported today that their second quarter earnings were up 6.1%, just under their projected 7-10% growth goal.
That alone doesn’t mean much to us. But this excerpt does:
Anheuser said it plans to implement price increases on the majority of its U.S. beer volume in early 2008, with a few selective price increases in the fourth quarter 2007.
Pioneer Press: Wisconsin Lawmakers Love Beer
There’s not really any new news to report, but this recent Pioneer Press article still provides an entertaining look at Wisconsin lawmakers’ fondness for beer.
From the article:
Politicians generally treat beer-related issues with kid gloves, knowing its rich history in the state, said Jerry Apps, who has written a history of Wisconsin breweries. It also has one of the state’s most powerful lobbies.
“It’s beer, cheese, brats and the Packers. Let’s face it, it’s been our history for some time,” he said.
