Grain Belt Commercial Winners Announced

As we previewed only two posts ago, Grain Belt announced the winners of their annual “Make Your Own Grain Belt Commercial” contest on Wednesday night. First prize ($1000 and a year’s supply of beer) went to DreamWorld Studios for their entry “Happy Grain Belt Day.”
You can watch the winning commercial and a few other entires at KARE11.com. Sadly, C.J.’s favorite - “Golden Shower” - didn’t make their play list.
Fat Tire Madness Sweeps Across Iowa
We all know too well the Fat Tire frenzy Minnesotans experienced this summer. On Monday, Iowans got their turn. A group of 25 decided to celebrate New Belgium Brewing’s debut in the state with an Elvis impersonator-led biking parade through the streets of Iowa City at 6:30am on Monday morning. The make-believe Elvis was riding a Fat Tire cruiser, constructed by a local bike shop.
New Grain Belt Ad Could Be “Golden Shower”
Grain Belt plans to announce the winners of their 2007 “Make Your Own Grain Belt Beer Commercial” contest Wednesday night at the Ritz Theater in northeast Minneapolis, and according to Star Tribune columnist C.J., one of the more interesting contenders is titled “Golden Shower.”
It’s very silly. The main character is sporting a 5 o’clock shadow, tattoos, an atrocious wig and a “sexy” ill-fitting outfit that cannot contain a sizable, drooping gut. A group of jealous women onlookers cannot understand why this woman, has the undivided, dance floor attention of some guys in this bar. So the women follow their competition into the restroom, where the secret is revealed: being drenched in Grain Belt.
A more complete story on the Grain Belt contest can be found at KARE11.com:
New Ulm-based Schell Brewing Company hasn’t survived and thrived for 147 years by being flashy, or throwing money around. You won’t find them using bikinied beach babes or big-bucks sports tie-ins to sell beer.
Schell uses the same philosophy with its Grain Belt label, which it purchased five years ago. Research shows that Grain Belt drinkers are a different breed, drawn to the brand’s retro appeal and counter-culture image.
“You have a little term we use, ‘independent influentials’, shared Schell CEO Ted Marti. “These are people who don’t follow the main trends, they tend to set their own trends. I think small and quirky are sort of their trademarks.”
First prize in the annual competition is $1,000 and a year’s supply of Grain Belt.

Wisconsin: Home Of Dirty Beer Lines
A story in the Chicago Tribune exposes Wisconsin’s dirty little secret: Bar owners in the state don’t clean their beer lines as often as they should.
Industry standards call for the lines to be cleaned at least once every two weeks. While they won’t make you sick, dirty beer lines can spoil beer. If you notice a buttery aftertaste, you’re likely drinking spoiled beer.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tested six beers from five bars and found four were dirty by brewers’ standards. The owners of two bars said they have the lines cleaned every two weeks, although receipts showed only monthly cleaning at one. The general manager of another said he had the lines cleaned monthly.

Did You Save Room For A Beer Dessert?
This story from the New York Daily News reports that dessert beers are popping up all over the city on restaurant menus. The trend is attributed to beer’s flavor being a better pairing with sweets than most wine. Before you pour Miller Lite over your next scoop of ice cream, keep in mind that the beers best suited for dessert are spiced, malt-heavy beers and fruit beers.
Rich Lindy, who lives on the upper West Side and works in real estate, liked the [beer] float for another reason: “It sort of keeps the buzz going,” he admits.
