Leinenkugel’s To Release Russian Imperial Stout
From Miller’s Brew Blog comes this announcement of Leine’s new Russian Imperial Stout:
Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout, the second in the Big Eddy series, hits select markets in Michigan and Wisconsin within the week. In Wisconsin it will be available on draft at select accounts and in 4-pack bottles in the off-premise. It will be available only in the off-premise in Michigan.
The “Big Eddy” moniker is derived from the name of the spring that feeds the Leinie brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wis. Beginning in late February, Leinenkugel’s tested its first big ale, Big Eddy Imperial IPA.
Brendan Noonan, brand manager for Leinenkugel’s, said the 140-year-old brewer (which is owned by Miller Brewing Company) says while the “big beer” area (think brews such as double IPAs, Russian imperial stouts and barley wines) is relatively small, it’s an area of growing interest among craft beer enthusiasts.
“Some people are looking for something a little more special,” he says. “We do feel this is a growing part of the market.”

German Company Has New Way To Keep Keg Beer Cold
You have to scan through this article to find it, but FoodProductDaily.com is reporting that German brewer Gaffel Becker & Company has developed a 5 liter keg that doesn’t require refrigeration. Instead, the brewer includes a pressure sleeve with the keg that will keep the beer at drinking temperature for up to 3 hours.

WSJ Studies Big Brewers Craft Beer Ventures
The Wall Street Journal published an interesting story this week (see the story on Twincities.com) on the push by big brewers to get into the growing craft beer market. While much of the story focuses on the widely-reported beer numbers (45% craft beer growth, 16% sales growth for independent craft beers, 5% of U.S. beer sales made up of craft beers), the most intriguing part of the story focuses on how the big brewers mask their craft beers, making sure to not openly reveal that they own the brews.
The major brewers generally avoid using the parent company’s name on the labels for their craft beers. Anheuser-Busch Cos., for example, lists Green Valley Brewing Co. as the maker of its Wild Hop Lager, an organic beer. Sunset Wheat from Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co., is owned by SABMiller PLC. Blue Moon Brewing Co. is a fully-owned subsidiary of Molson Coors Brewing Co., but the parent company isn’t mentioned on its beer labels…..
The major brewers say they’re not trying to deceive anyone. “We see Blue Moon as being a special brand,” said Andy England, chief marketing officer of Coors Brewing Co., the U.S. unit of Molson Coors. It’s “no more relevant than Kashi (cereal) being owned by Kellogg or Lexus being owned by Toyota,” he said.
What’s your take? Do you feel deceived by Coors when you’re drinking a Blue Moon? Do you care that Miller owns that Leine’s Creamy Dark you’re downing?

City Pages Interview With Doug Hoverson
Minnesota beer book author Doug Hoverson is featured in the current issue of City Pages. Hoverson is the author of the recently released book Amber Water: The History of Brewing in Minnesota. Check out the full interview here.
It’s no shocker that the Midwest, often referred to as the Grain Belt, makes great beer. And though lately Minnesota has experienced a beer renaissance of sorts with brands such as Surly and Summit, as well as notable brewpubs like Town Hall, Minnesotans have been producing beer as far back as colonization. Doug Hoverson, a beer judge, teacher, and drink enthusiast, has meticulously reconstructed the history of Minnesota beer, from homebrews to Hamms to the present, in Amber Water: The History of Brewing in Minnesota. He took a moment in his busy schedule to chat with City Pages.
