August Schell Copes With The Rising Cost Of Hops

From KEYC TV in Mankato:

Costs to operate just about anything go up over time and that’s the case in New Ulm, where Schell Brewery is facing more expensive costs on their ingredients. News 12’s Max Jensen found out what the brewery is doing to offset the high costs. For a brewery that has been open for close to 150 years, rising prices are nothing new. But when it comes to the main ingredient, one change in supply can have a big effect on the cost of a cold one.You have to eat the price increases and try to pass on what you can what you reasonably can and go from there. The price of Hops has shot up because of a recent shortage. With many producers fresh out, some breweries looking to other breweries for their supplies paying a lot more money in the process. Going forward you’re looking at higher prices because of those pressures and although recent rises in prices made the costs of ingredients go up, Schell Brewery says they will make money saving cuts in other areas to keep production strong. Look at ways of saving energy, look at ways at improving efficiently, reduce your internal loses and wastes, just become more efficient. While every industry tries to become more efficient in their ways of work, Schell Brewery isn’t going to compromise their product. We’ve never sacrificed the quality of the product I don’t believe in that. Making that beer that everybody knows and is used too, will become harder but it won’t get to the point where the brewery has to close its doors. We’re all stable companies, nobody is going to lock their doors over this. It’s going to get tougher, obviously. Whether it works itself out or we continue to see prices rise, Schell Brewery says they’ll be all right and continue to brew the products they’ve become famous for.

Get Ready For Bockfest 2008

Bockfest 2008 at the August Schell brewery is fast approaching. If you haven’t been to the best beer event in Minnesota, then you should start making your plans to attend on February 2, 2008. To get you in the mood, check out the video clips below from last year’s fun.

The Country’s Most Expensive Beer? Sam Adams

At $120 for a 24 ounce bottle, Samuel Adams’ Utopias is the most expensive beer in the country.  Thankfully, the beer boasts 27% alcohol by volume, so you won’t need more than a couple.  Here’s more:

The Utopias container, a ceramic bottle molded to resemble a brew kettle, is a collectible in and of itself. The copper-colored liquid inside hasn’t a bubble of carbonation. The first sensations are a viscous mouth feel and a sweet sherrylike flavor with nuances of toffee and maple. There are notes of vanilla and plum and a hint of charred wood.

A long, lingering alcohol burn, more reminiscent of a cognac or brandy than a beer, is followed by a sweet burned-caramel aftertaste.

Pioneer Press: Local Brews About To Cost More

An article in today’s Pioneer Press puts a local spin on the industry-wide predictions of higher craft beer prices this winter thanks to a shortage of barley and hops.

“Don’t be surprised to see everything go up 15, 20 percent,” said Jeff Williamson, co-owner and brewmaster at Flat Earth Brewing Co. in St. Paul. He plans to keep his beer prices steady for at least the next year.”Everybody’s feeling a pinch. My wife and I have actually been talking about maybe having someone start growing hops here locally,” he said.Industry watchers and beer makers forecast the “pinch” to last through at least 2010. It will take that long for farmers - many who switched to growing more-profitable corn and soybeans for biofuels - to realize there’s a demand again for hops and switch back.

An emphatic post on MNBeer.com sheds some light on how local beer drinkers and homebrewers are impacted by the same shortage of supplies that’s hurting the local craft beer makers.
