Wisconsin: Home Of Dirty Beer Lines

A story in the Chicago Tribune exposes Wisconsin’s dirty little secret: Bar owners in the state don’t clean their beer lines as often as they should.

Industry standards call for the lines to be cleaned at least once every two weeks. While they won’t make you sick, dirty beer lines can spoil beer. If you notice a buttery aftertaste, you’re likely drinking spoiled beer.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tested six beers from five bars and found four were dirty by brewers’ standards. The owners of two bars said they have the lines cleaned every two weeks, although receipts showed only monthly cleaning at one. The general manager of another said he had the lines cleaned monthly.
